My Top 5 Favourite Fragrances

I love perfume. Finding the perfect ones for me, walking past people in the street and wondering what that amazing-smelling perfume is, but mostly the smell of my locals Boots or Duty Free at any airport (that’s the best smell in the world to me, all of the perfumes mixed together in the air). I’m not going to pretend I know what I’m talking about, so here are 5 fragrances I love, with my amateurish opinion followed by some of the scents that are actually in each product.

You by Glossier

This is the perfume I get most complimented on. It’s a gentle but beautiful scent that really smells natural. I love it when people hug me and tell me I smell nice, and this perfume is definitely the one I’ve been wearing most when I hear that.

Base notes of ambrette, ambrox and musk that ‘melt in with your skin’. Top notes of iris root and pink pepper ‘that say “nice to meet you!”’.

Gold by Next

This is my main go-to perfume because it’s so me! I wear it to work most days. It’s slightly sweet but quite musky and earthy (at least I think it is). Unfortunately I can’t find it online apart from a tiny bottle in a set. I hope they don’t discontinue it (like they’ve done to a favourite of mine before) – I’ll be determined to find another bottle of it soon!

‘A dazzling fragrance with golden flower nectars, gloriously sweet vanilla and molten amber.’

Honorary shoutouts to two other products from Next. Just Pink – my long-time love and annual stocking filler for a few years, and the Paradise Island body spray which makes me smell like a tropical wonderland but I think they’ve unfortunately discontinued. Another of my favourite body sprays is ‘Wills’ by Jack Wills, which I also can’t find anywhere but eBay. It’s a lovely summer scent though, and I’m annoyed I can’t get it anymore!

Paco by Paco Rabanne

I bought this on a plane because it was marketed as a unisex fragrance, and that’s the best idea I’ve ever heard. I love both ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ scents so this one’s perfect for me. It’s bold but sweet and refreshing and I recommend it to everyone.

Opening notes: mandarin, sour lemon. Centre: lavender, tea, jasmine, cyclamen, pine. Base: cedar, sandalwood, tonka bean, musk.

212 VIP by Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera makes some amazing perfumes. 212 VIP is no exception. It seems I love musky perfumes because this is another one with that description, so I guess I have a type.

Notes: gardenia, musk and rum

Black Opium by YSL

This is the most luxurious perfume I own, definitely one I leave for special occasions. My boyfriend bought it for me last Christmas and I only use it sparingly, but I adore it. It smells deep and warm but floral and it’s certainly long-lasting (it better be for the price).

Notes: black coffee, white florals, vanilla, ‘bound by a warm undertone of white musk’.

My entire perfume collection on a mirrored tray I bought at Tesco
